Data is often described as the 'lifeblood' of an organisation and yet it is often found to have poor quality, governance and management; on some occasions you will wonder how the place works at all and may become frustrated with the need to constantly fix the data that you handle; the penalties for poor data can, in some businesses carry significant financial penalties. In other organisations it is the reputation that gets hurt by having poor control over the data. Regardless of how the business is affected it will result in lost revenue and effect the bottom line.

The control and governance of a business's data is a crucial measure to ensure that customers are appropriately protected and that the use of data conforms to guidelines in the business and the wider community. The development of new regulatory approaches such as GDPR reinforces the need to have great quality data with controls and measures, after all if you don't measure the data how can you possibly know whether its good or poor quality.

Organisations often have no formal governance structure for data, the policy is written and the processes and procedures are in evidence but not followed. The predominant cause of this is the belief that data governance and management is an unnecessary overhead which consumes both money and time; It is often a surprise to organisations when they discover that not having sufficient control and governance brings some kind of enforcement regime which may include a penalty. It does not have to be like that; with understanding and business champions the process can be developed and embedded without unnecessary overhead and cost.

Data is about people. It is people that create systems and processes and its people that work with them and in some cases against them; systems, do not yet, design and develop themselves! Therefore its the people that have to decide the priority around controlling data, the access to it and how it is used. Knowing what you have, where it is and how its controlled will enable improved decision making based on scientific analysis. Rubicon-Data provides the mechanism to get the strategy embedded, quality assessed and data controlled in an efficient and effective manner, through understanding what you want and how best to get it.
